iTIP, in partnership with Travel Iowa, is proud to launch the new FAM Tour Support Fund — a program designed to help Iowa destinations introduce qualified meeting planners to the state through firsthand experiences.
The meetings and conventions industry continues to be an important economic driver for Iowa communities. While planners can research destinations online, there is significant value in experiencing a destination in person. FAM (familiarization) tours provide meeting planners the opportunity to tour venues, experience local hospitality, explore attractions, and better understand what makes Iowa communities unique.
The FAM Tour Support Fund was created to support Iowa destinations hosting these experiences and building relationships with planners who influence site selection for future meetings, conferences, and events.
Through the program, Iowa-based DMOs, CVBs, and tourism offices may apply for sponsorship support to assist with the direct costs of hosting a meetings-focused FAM tour in Iowa. Eligible expenses may include lodging, meals, transportation within Iowa, attraction admissions, itinerary materials, and destination-representative welcome items.
The program was intentionally designed to be simple, flexible, and focused on outcomes. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis throughout 2026, with awards of up to $2,500 available per FAM tour. Sponsorship funding is distributed following completion of the tour and submission of post-event reporting.
Qualified planners participating in the FAM must represent out-of-state business opportunities and influence site selection for meetings and conferences. Iowa-based planners may participate if their work involves bringing out-of-state groups to Iowa.
The goal of the FAM Tour Support Fund is not simply to host tours, but to create long-term opportunities for Iowa communities. By helping planners experience Iowa firsthand, destinations can strengthen relationships, generate future leads and RFPs, and increase consideration of Iowa for regional and national meetings.
Applications are currently open and will be accepted until funds are fully committed or until the October 15, 2026 application deadline.
