ECONOMIC IMPACT CALCULATOR
CyBiz Labs of Iowa State University was hired to develop the Economic Impact Calculator Model.
Watch the iTIP training webinar or the CyBiz Labs tutorial video to learn more about inputting information into the model.
The Economic Impact Model is designed to measure the full effect of an event on the local economy. The model takes average spending inputs for the attendees of an event, the total population in attendance, the percentage of attendees from outside the events county, and the share of people requiring a hotel room due to the event to calculate the impact.
Learn more about the methodology and use the calculator below.
ITIP ECONOMIC IMPACT CALCULATOR
The Economic Impact Calculator Model uses relationships between the different categories outlined in the measurable effects section to accurately determine the ripple effects of spending at an event on the local economy. For example, if a dollar is spent at the event on a food item, it may have taken $0.20 worth of fuel, $0.40 worth of product, and $0.10 worth of labor. Making the total effect on the local economy for this specific example $1.70 in total. The model has accurate and reliable relationships programed into the backend, giving the best possible tracking of supply chain trickle-down effects.
Results from the model include direct spending, indirect spending, and induced spending.

Each year, iTIP conducts a comprehensive survey of destination organizations to gather data on organizational budgets and funding, staffing, and salary and benefits information. An Iowa tourism association has administered a version of this survey since 2010.
The survey aims to provide tourism entities with valuable data to support discussions on funding advocacy, staffing needs, and evaluation of organizational benefits. It covers various topics, including lodging, funding, operating budgets, existing occupations, employee benefits and incentives, and respondent demographics.
The survey results are confidential and not available to the public. Only participating organizations have access to the full data.
An aggregate report of the results is available here. The data is categorized by urban and rural destinations to provide context for the differences in information. Organizations are encouraged to use this data as it best fits their needs.
The 2023 survey was conducted in collaboration with the Iowa Tourism Office and UNI Strategic Marketing Services (SMS) / Institute for Decision Making (IDM).
