ACTION ALERT: SUPPORT CRITICAL TOURISM FUNDING
Although the legislative session is nearing its end, final decisions on the state budget remain unresolved. Two key tourism funding programs still need support – your outreach to elected officials can make a difference. Share why these investments matter to your work and community.

Regional Sports Authority Districts (RSAD)

Increased to $750,000 in 2024, RSAD supports 10 Sports Commissions across Iowa in hosting amateur sports events – the foundation of Iowa’s sports tourism. In 2023, amateur sports in Iowa generated over $21 million in state and local tax revenue.

RSAD dollars fund bid fees, venue rentals, officials, and marketing. The program is included in the Senate RIIF budget (SSB 1238), but as a standalone item in the House budget (HSB 330), pulling from the Sports Wagering Fund. The House and Senate proposals fund RSAD from different sources, and we urge them to work together to ensure this critical funding remains in the final budget.

Iowa Major Events & Tourism Fund

This new fund would help Iowa compete for large-scale national tourism and sporting events – something all neighboring states already do. It’s not just about facilities; destinations often need matching funds to win bids.

Potential events this fund could support:

The Senate RIIF budget (SSB 1238) includes funding. The House proposals (HSB 334 and HSB 330) do not. To keep Iowa competitive on the national stage, the House and Senate must come together to ensure this vital funding is included in the final budget agreement.

Action Needed:
Contact your House members and urge them to agree with the Senate on supporting both RSAD and the Iowa Major Events & Tourism Fund. These programs are vital to Iowa’s tourism growth, competitiveness, and economic impact.
